Batu Caves is a limestone hill that has a series of caves and cave temples in Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia. It takes its name from the Malay word batu, meaning 'rock'. The hill was originally known as Kapal Tanggang from the legend of Si Tanggang. The town nearby is named after the Batu Caves limestone formation.

A colourful and remote place in Malaysia. The Batu Caves, near Kuala Lumpur, with its large statue and giant multi-coloured staircase, are a group of caves. The caves, home to the largest Hindu shrine outside India, are located about 10 kilometres north of the city. This set of natural caves has been transformed into a sanctuary dedicated to the god of war. The temple of Ramanaya with its gigantic sculptures can be found here. There are also many monkeys (beware of theft) outside, along with other statues: Shiva, Ganesh, Hanuman. Then the main cave of the place, 100 meters high and 272 steps to reach it with as guard a huge 42 meters statue of the god Murugan. If you go there in January or February, nearly a million Hindus come here on pilgrimage to celebrate Murugan. At the bottom of the cave, you can climb a few more steps to reach a natural light well.
